When you first arrive at the ornate gates of Elmswood Estate you immediately think “wow!” And by the time you have driven down the lovely long driveway in between the vines, you simply can’t wait to see what more awaits. The approach along the hedge to the Cellar Door doesn’t disappoint: the views are simply jaw-dropping!
The Howe family have owned and run Elmswood Estate for more than a decade now. The property is situated in the Upper Yarra Valley and is home to 20 acres of 30-year-old vines. Originally planted in the early 1980s by the Zitzlaff family for the Oakridge Estate reserve range, Elmswood Estate now produces varieties including Pinot Noir, Syrah, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, in addition to the older Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.
The location of the vineyard on fertile red volcanic soil, coupled with higher elevation and uniquely east-facing vineyard (similar to those in Burgundy), grant Elmswood Estate the advantage of being able to delay harvest to suit their wine style philosophy. This produces premium quality, elegant wines all grown, made and bottled on site.
The wines at Elmswood Estate are grown and made by some very talented people. Winemaker, Han Tao Lau, joined the team in 2013 when he helped oversee Elmswood’s new on-site winery. He has a degree in Oenology from the University of Adelaide and has spent the last 11 years making wine in the Yarra Valley, along with vintages in France and Germany.
Denis Dajlan is the Vineyard Manager and has over 20 years experience working primarily in the Upper Yarra Valley. Denis’ knowledge of the area’s soils, weather, and growing conditions are second to none and together with Han, they make a formidable team.
Tourism Victoria has voted Elmswood Estate as having one of the best views in the Yarra Valley. Just a short one hour’s drive from Melbourne, Elmswood Estate is the perfect place to relax while you taste through the wine range. Cathy Skinner is Elmswood’s Cellar Door Host and is enthusiastic and passionate in making sure visitors have the best possible time. Guests are offered fully guided tastings and hear stories about how the wines are made. There is always something special on tasting and you might be lucky enough to have a taste of some limited release back-vintages from their museum stock. A rare treat!
For those who just want to chill out, there is ample space to sit and relax overlooking the spectacular vista while enjoying a bottle of Elmswood Estate wine and cheese platter to match.
“I’m getting married” I hear you say! With the stunning views and gorgeous setting, Elmswood Estate is also the perfect spot for luxury weddings or private events. The property features two main adjoining event spaces with “The Pavilion” being the premier space, which is a glass-enclosed building with spectacular views of the Yarra Ranges from every angle.
Celebrated Australian wine critic, James Halliday announced in 2013 that Elmswood Estate is one of the regions “Dark Horses” as a boutique wine producer with an exciting future and wines to match.
Visit Elmwood Estate and you will find it hard not to agree with me about the hype!
