Owners & Winemakers of a hidden gem in the Yarra Valley
Simon established Steels Creek Estate in 1981. The 20 acre property is situated in the picturesque Steels Creek Valley (located about 10km north of Yarra Glen) with sweeping views towards Kinglake National Park and Mount Slide. It is home to 5 acres of 35-year-old vines set amongst this beautiful landscape.
Premium cool climate wines are produced from estate grown fruit at Yarra Valley’s smallest 5 star Winery. The low cropped fruit is handpicked and processed in small batches adopting wild yeast ferments with minimal intervention.
“With such a small amount of fruit Simon makes each of his wines as a straight varietal so wine lovers can identify and enjoy the characteristics that each grape type delivers” says Joanne
Steels Creek Estate is particularly well known for its Colombard, which sells out every vintage. They also have a loyal following for the other varieties they produce including barrel fermented Chardonnay, a velvety Shiraz with great spice and pepper, an elegant fruit driven Cabernet Sauvignon. Steels Creek Estate also makes a very small batch (300 bottles) of Cabernet Franc each year. Light and silky on the pallet with an exquisite bouquet of unlit cigar this is a wine you do not want to miss.
Steels Creek Estate can be found off the beaten path, which adds to the charm of this amazing hidden gem. The wineries along Steels Creek Road are the first wineries you come across heading to the Yarra Valley from Tullamarine airport, so make sure you consider turning left!
The area around the Steels Creek Valley was hit hard by the Black Saturday bushfires in February 2009. After a long exhausting night fighting the most severe bushfire Victoria has ever seen, Simon and Joanne miraculously survived with their lives and were able to save their home, winery/cellar door and machinery shed. An incredible feat that not many others were able to achieve!
Since that time, Simon and Joanne have done an enormous amount of work in and around the property and have nurtured their property back to its former beauty and more.
Simon and Joanne do ALL the work from tending the vines, harvesting, winemaking and bottling, not to mention all the marketing, admin, cellar door operations and wine sales. It truly is a boutique hands-on operation. They are lovely people who have a passion for growing and making memorable wine. The Cellar Door which is located in their working winery so when you visit Simon & Joanne are happy to show you around the wine making process – just ask!
